Restaurant Recommendations
Staying at Gothic Heights Inn puts you in the heart of St. Louis’ culinary scene, with some of the city’s best dining just steps away. While the city is full of fantastic options, these nearby favorites never disappoint—and they’re all locally owned, no chains in sight.
Dinner:
Sado
- 5201 Shaw Avenue
- 314-390-2883; sado-stl.com
- Dinner Tuesday-Sunday (closed Monday)
- $$$-$$$$
A seafood restaurant in the heart of The Hill? Yes, and it’s phenomenal.
#1 on Ian Froeb’s Top 100 St. Louis Restaurants for 2025, this spot more than lives up to the hype. Long before the secret was out, it was already our favorite place to dine. These days it’s our go-to for a special occasion—or even just high-end cocktails before a show. Here’s our little secret: we’ve never actually ordered straight off the menu. Instead, we always go for the Omakase dinner—set a price per person and let the chefs take it from there. In our experience, $75–$100 per person is the sweet spot for just the right amount of food. The selections are always spot-on and unforgettable. Jesse swears by their Dirty Martini, while the Okino 75—a Japanese twist on the French 75—is a cocktail worth savoring. The space is intimate (think cozy bar and small dining room), so reservations are highly recommended. And if you do end up waiting, it’s absolutely worth it.
Charlie Gitto’s
- 5226 Shaw Avenue
- 314-772-8898; charliegittos.com
- Dinner daily
- $$$-$$$$
Step into a true St. Louis classic on The Hill—Charlie Gitto’s has been serving up old-school Italian favorites since 1981, and it’s still going strong for a reason. The lasagna is pure comfort, the house-made fettuccine Alfredo is silky perfection, and the bucatini all’Amatriciana hits just right. And of course, no visit is complete without their toasted ravioli, said to trace straight back to the original recipe that put T-Ravs on the map. This is fine dining with a warm, family touch—an institution not just for The Hill, but for all of St. Louis. Reservations? Definitely recommended.
Anthonino's Taverna
- 2225 Macklind Ave
- (314) 773-4455; anthoninos.com
- Lunch and Dinner Monday to Saturday (Closed Sunday)
- $$-$$$
Mix a little Greek flair with classic Italian and you’ve got one of our favorite spots on The Hill—just a mile from the Inn! If you’re only going to try one plate of St. Louis’ famous Toasted Ravioli (T-Ravs), this is the place. Jesse is obsessed with the Gyro Pizza, Ken can’t get enough of the Pesto Ravioli, and the menu is packed with gems like Palermo Chicken, Greek Salad, Lasagna, and some seriously fun pizza combos. Honestly, you can’t go wrong—it’s a local favorite for a reason. And if the line’s too long, grab takeout and enjoy a feast back at the Inn.
The Fountain On Locust
- 3037 Locust St
- (314) 535-7800
- Lunch & Dinner Tuesday to Sunday (Closed Monday)
- $$-$$$
Step into this retro soda fountain and café in the heart of St. Louis, where Art Deco décor, cheeky soda-fountain flair, and even an old-time radio station playing in your booth set the stage for a night that feels straight out of another era. It’s one of our favorite spots to celebrate—a birthday dinner, a fun night out, or just when we’re craving classic comfort with style. Jesse never skips the Polish Pickle Soup, while Ken is torn between the Fig, Ham & Gouda Grilled Cheese and the Pesto Chicken. Can’t decide? Order the “pick two” and enjoy the best of both worlds with soup and sandwich. Add Jesse’s Dirty Martini and Ken’s Old Fashion, then finish with the chocolate brownie cake in a cup—pure perfection from start to sweet finish.
Lunch:
St. Louis is a real sandwich city. We have multiple places that can easily be called “best sandwich place in the city”. Here are our favorites:
Adrianna's On The Hill
- 5101 Shaw Ave
- (314) 773-3833
- Lunch Tues-Saturday (10:30-3pm)
- $$
This longtime, family-owned café is a Hill favorite for quick, casual Sicilian fare—and yes, it’s worth the wait. Jesse is all about the Hot Sunny’s Veggie, while Ken swears by the Italian Beef and Salsiccia sandwiches. The line often stretches out the door, but don’t let that scare you—it moves fast, and the payoff is delicious. On a nice spring or fall day, grab a seat outside and enjoy it al fresco. Fun fact: both Jesse and her mom have worked here over the years, so it feels a little like home to us. If you go, tell them Jesse and Ken from Gothic Heights Inn sent you!
The Gramophone
- 4243 Manchester Ave
- (314) 531-5700; gramophonestl.toast.site
- Lunch/Dinner Tues-Sunday (closed Monday)

A true neighborhood gem in The Grove, this pub and sandwich shop cranks out some of the best late-night eats in town. Think creative, hearty sandwiches, comforting soups, and more than 20 local beers on tap—plus daily specials that keep things interesting. It’s our go-to spot after a show, or on those Sunday nights when everywhere else has gone dark (lifesaver!). Ken can never resist the South Austin Melt, Philly Cheesesteak, or Alcatraz, while Jesse is all about the Veggie and the Frenchy. Honestly, you can’t go wrong—everything here hits the spot.

Since 1987, this family-run diner has been serving up hot-off-the-griddle breakfast classics (and more) every day from 7am to 4pm. It’s our go-to spot for a hearty breakfast within walking distance of the Inn. Ken swears by the breakfast fried rice, while Jesse is all about their Eggs Benedict. Sundays can get busy, so plan to arrive early—but trust us, the food is worth it.
Southwest Diner
- 6803 Southwest Ave

The Southwest Diner name says it all—the food here takes classic diner fare and gives it a bold southwest twist. Less than a mile down the hill from the Inn, it’s an easy (and tasty) stop for breakfast or brunch. Ken is all about the Breakfast Burrito, Jesse goes for the Greek Omelette, and if you’re recovering from a late night, the legendary Southwest Slinger is the cure. Weekends can get packed, so come early or swing by on a weekday for a more relaxed vibe.

With good food, friendly vibes, and prices that won’t break the bank, this is your go-to for a casual night out.
Ted Drewes Frozen Custard
- 6726 Chippewa St
- https://teddrewes.com/

No trip to St. Louis is complete without a stop at Ted Drewes Frozen Custard, a local legend since 1929. Famous for its “concretes”—so thick they’re served upside down—this stand draws long lines that move quickly on warm nights. For us, it’s more than just tradition: Jesse worked here for years, so it feels like a second home. Ordering is simple—pick your treat, hop in a line, and step up to the counter. Ken never strays from the Oreo Concrete, while Jesse’s all-time favorite is the Kiddie Fudge Raspberry Sundae with whipped cream. Whether it’s dessert after dinner or a destination all on its own, Ted Drewes is a sweet slice of St. Louis history you don’t want to miss.
