If you require assistance between the hours of 9:00 am & 9:00 pm, go to the Main Office in the Collins Building

(please note: the Main Office is closed from 12:00 pm-1:00 pm and from 6:00 pm-7:00 pm, during meals)

General Guidelines

  • Sagamore is a smoke and vape-free campus. You must cross the gate onto state land to smoke or vape

  • Please keep the gates closed

  • Cars must stay in the parking lot during your stay. If you leave camp, use the guest bridge, do not drive through upper camp

  • If you hike on your own on the trails around Sagamore, please sign in and out on the sheet in the foyer outside the Main Office

  • Don’t hang wet items on railings

  • Use the critter-proof bins found in each room to store any snacks

  • Lights in the hallways and stairways should never be turned off. Lights in rooms and bathrooms should be turned off when not in use

  • Electric bikes are not allowed on the property, regardless of whether the battery is in use

Dining Hall

  • Do not remove any dishes, glasses or flatware from the dining hall. There are to-go cups and containers available

  • Please help us by clearing your dishes after meals

Good Fires

  • All fires must be laid & lit by staff. No exceptions. Request a fire at the office or to program staff

  • Fire locations available: Main Lodge Lounge, Wigwam Lounge, Collins Lounge, Playhouse, Dining Hall, and Lean-to

  • Once the fire is started, guests may add firewood to keep it going. Otherwise, keep screens in place. Feed only with large split logs (not kindling) and don’t over-stoke

  • Before leaving the fire, push coals to the back of the fireplace. If at the lean-to, put out the fire with the provided bucket of water

Bad Fires

  • If there is a fire, exit the building promptly and meet on the main lawn, or on the road if in Wigwam. Do not re-enter the building until staff does a headcount and gives the ok

  • Every room has an emergency evacuation plan posted in the room, please familiarize yourself with it

  • Look around your space and locate the fire alarm pull and fire extinguisher. If a fire alarm is pulled, the alarm sounds within that building only. Please also alert staff of the fire by going to the office or by ringing the bell at the dining hall. The bell at the dining hall acts as a general emergency alarm when it is rung outside of meal times

Medical & Other Emergencies

  • During office hours, go to the office and ask staff for assistance. They will contact 911 and other staff who should be involved

Outside of office hours:

  • Find the emergency phone in the Collins entryway outside the office

  • Dial 911 if necessary, follow instructions on the wall above the phone. Let the 911 operator know you are at Great Camp Sagamore in Raquette Lake, NY. Tell them the nature of the emergency and where the emergency is located (Main Lodge, Wigwam, etc.). Direct them to follow the “deliveries” sign when they arrive. Stay on the phone until dispatch hangs up, then don’t leave the phone in case of callback

  • Dial 127 to alert the Sagamore senior staff member on call

  • All the information you need to contact someone in an emergency is posted near the emergency phone in Collins outside the office.

  • LAST RESORT: RING THE MEAL BELL UNTIL STAFF ARRIVES

Check-out Procedure

  • Drop only SHEETS, PILLOWCASES, & TOWELS into bins located on each floor of your building or in the closets of cabins

  • Stop by the Main Office by 10:00am to check out

Boathouse Vessels

  • Modern canoes, kayaks & paddle boards are available on a first come/first served basis. Paddles and life jackets are provided in the Boathouse as well.

  • Guests are not allowed to put personal vessels in Sagamore Lake to protect against invasive species contamination

  • If you would like to use vintage canoes or Adirondack Guideboats, please ask for help from Programs staff

Boathouse Procedures

  • Use sign-out sheet (in the canoe with the life jackets) for boating & open-water swimming

  • Everyone in a boat/paddle board must wear a lifejacket. There are several child and adult sizes

  • Note the locations of the ring buoy, rescue tube, reach pole, and first aid kit

  • Stay off the water if thunderstorms are approaching, and stay off for 30 minutes after the last thunder

  • If someone needs assistance in the water, use throw devices or paddle out to them. Do not enter the water to assist/rescue unless you are a certified lifeguard

  • There is an air horn near the sign-out sheet – three consecutive blasts signal an emergency

  • If high wind is making it hard to make progress on the open lake, hug the shoreline to block the wind. If you find you cannot make any progress at all, you can get out along the Southern shoreline, walk back, and find a program staff member to retrieve your boat

  • Only swim in the designated area

  • Don’t fish from the dock, fish from the shore or a boat
